Welcome to Bromley; the suburbs, where nothing interesting ever happens. Right?
Well, no not quite.

This exhibition heralds a small collection of stories from Bromley’s past, to show what makes Bromley special and significant. From music legends and world famous authors, to inventions and innovations that changed the world. Bromley has been a home to it all.

This is where it happened.

This is Bromley.

52 Oaks was commissioned by Redman Design to tell the hidden stories of Bromley. Turns out Bromley has been hiding its light under a bushel. For example, Bromley has been a home to world famous artists, authors, musicians scientists and sportspeople, such as

  • David Bowie
  • Enid Blyton
  • H G Wells
  • W G Grace
  • John Lubbock
  • Charles Darwin

Although Bowie was born in Brixton, he spent his childhood and teenage years in Bromley and is known to have performed in the borough many times during his early career. However, Bowie would often tell people he was raised in Brixton, perhaps because more people have heard of Brixton, or perhaps he thought it sounded trendier than Bromley.
